Song of the Week

Hey Guys,

'Talk Show Host' by Radiohead is my chosen Song of the Week. You may recognise it because it is used in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. I adore this film and when I heard my friend playing this on his ukulele, I had to find out what it was called. I think it is a great song and I hope you like it.

Cancer Awareness

Hey Guys,
Assuming all of you have Instagram, you'll be aware of #nomakeupselfie, and although I think this is a bizarre way to get attention for a charity, it is working very well.

The idea of this hash-tag it to nominate somebody to take a picture of themselves without any make up on, in the caption you then nominate somebody else and put 'text BEAT to 70099 to donate'. All the money from these texts is going to Cancer Research, I don't know how much money this has actually made but I've donated and if anything more people are aware of Cancer Research.

However it does have some faults, what I find the most frustrating about this whole thing is the younger kids doing this; they have no intention of donating or actually raising awareness for Cancer, they probably don't even understand how serious Cancer is. Instead of putting the number for BEAT down, they simple just laugh about it and tag all of their friends thinking that this is just a game, and there are no words out there that can express my anger with this.

But if you are one of those loving, generous, caring people out there who know and understand how serious Cancer is, wants to help and are willing to donate a couple of pounds PLEASE donate £3 please text BEAT to 70099. The next time you're a Starbucks and are going to order a £3 hot chocolate or smoothie, instead thing that that money could be used to help save somebody's life.

Song of the Week

Hey Guys,
You may be getting into the summer mood like I am and the perfect song for that would have to be American Authors, 'Best day of my life'.

Books For Summer

Hey Guys,
Sorry that we haven't been posting much lately, we are coming up to our GCSE's and sadly must concentrate on our revision.

This post is about my huge pile of books that has accumulated in my room over the last few months. Being so busy with revision and so many other things I have had hardly any spare time to read. I find this really frustrating because there are just so many books I have bought or been given that I want to read and they are starting to pile up.

I am hoping to read all these books in the summer (when the dreaded exams are finally over). We will be between Year 11 and Sixth Form so will be trying to relax as much as possible, reading is a great way to relax, and if your don't think it is you obviously just haven't found the right book!

So here is my list of books to read in the summer, it is very long already and I expect it will grow as I have my eye on even more books in Waterstones.
  • The Great Gatsby - F. Scott. Fitzgerald
  • The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mocking Jay - Suzanne Collins
  • Finding Violet Park - Jenny Valentine
  • Barry Trotter and The Shameless Parody, Barry Trotter and the Unnecessary Sequel, Barry Trotter and The Dead Horse - Michael Gerber
  • The Host - Stephanie Meyer
  • The Grapes Of Wrath - John Steinbeck
  • The Fiery Heart - Richelle Mead
  • Teacher's Dead - Benjamin Zephaniah
  • Autobiography - Morrissey
  • Les Miserables - Victor Hugo (think this will take me longer than the summer, it is huge!!)
  • The House At Pooh Corner - A. A. Milne
  • The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas
Perhaps I am being a bit ambitious with my list but I am a quick reader so you never know I may read them all. I will do another post at the end of summer to tell you which ones I managed to read and will try and review them as I go along.

Daisy and I love reading, and maybe on this list you have found a book you want to read or want to recommend any book to us, if so let us know at haisy15@gmail.com

Great Gatsby

Hey Guys,
Both of us recently borrowed The Great Gatsby (the film) from our friend Liz. We have both wanted to watch it for a long time so were excited to finally see it, hoping it would live up to our high expectations. It did.

Holly
When I saw that The Great Gatsby was being released as a film I was so excited and became even more excited when I discovered that Baz Luhrmann was directing it, he is an absolute genius. He directed the modern Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, which are two of my favourite films. As soon as the film started I could see Luhrmann's influence on the film, I knew that it was going to be great.

The film was stunning and I rode a rollercoaster of emotion, feeling every emotion each character felt, thanks to the fantastic acting of the likes of Toby Maguire, Leonardo Di Caprio and Carey Mulligan. They all played their characters so beautifully and bought the film to life in a way I could have only imagined.

The film exceeded my expectations, I love the unpredictability of the storyline, the amazing filming, the costumes, the actors and the way (according to my dad) the film was very true to the book. I own two copies of the book and now the mocks are over plan to read it as soon as possible, I honestly can't wait.

I would really recommend this film, I can't stress enough how much this film has influenced how I feel about humanity and it has made me step back and try to understand people's actions more. I know it sounds silly but it is honestly wonderful and not to watch it would be a mistake.

Daisy
I feel like Holly's fantastic review just about sums up how I feel about it. Like she said Luhrmann's iconic panning in and out, and fast forward filming were noticeable from the beginning - even if it did take me to the end of the film to realise who was directing it.

As well as the amazing plot line and the unexpected ending, I really found the deleted scenes fascinating, that is if you're smart enough to realise they're on the DVD.

For each deleted scene Luhrmann explained why they were not used in the film and the most common reason was, he wanted to keep everything focused on Nick and Gatsby's relationship. Spoilers -  There's an emotional scene where Gatsby's dad goes to his funeral and although I can imagine the ending being just as brilliant, it's understandable where Luhrmann comes from, wanting everything solely focused on Nick's emotions.

It was a fabulous film, with all the detail put into the costumes and sets, that it would be a shame if you didn't watch it.

Song Of The Week

Hey Guys,
I have chosen 'Don't Stop' by Nina Nesbitt as my Song Of The Week. I have chosen this because I love the original by Fleetwood Mac, I bought the record last year and was worried when I heard it was going to be covered but Nina has done a fabulous job. I saw Nina perform this at the V Festival last year and it was really stunning.

DIY Lip scrub

Hey Guys,
My lips had been quite dry recently and I was thinking of going to buy the LUSH lip scrub, which you're all familiar with. But as you know I'm a cheapskate, so I thought I'd make my own scrub and the outcome was fantastic.

Here's a link to the website I found - http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Tasty-Lip-Scrub but I winged the measurements to make a smaller batch and here's how I did it.

Materials:
Bigish spoon (this is the kind I eat my cereal with)
1 spoon - Caster Sugar
1 spoon - Virgin Oil
Golden Syrup
Food colouring (optional)
Flavouring (optional)

Time to make: maximum 5 minutes

1. Add the sugar and oil together in a bowl and just mix well, The oil is essential because that's what hydrates your lips and the sugar is what exfoliates.

2. Add in a drop of golden syrup until it sticks together. The website said honey but I don't like that so I substituted it, I think anything sticky would have worked.

3. Then you're done. You can leave it like that or you can add some food colouring to make it more appealing. I used red and it made a nice dark pink/light red colour.
You don't have to stop there, I added a few drops of vanilla because it just makes it taste amazing.

4. Finally just stick it in a pot. I found this little one lying around but I know it's from Primark from their travel kits.

I use this every other night after I've brushed my teeth and before I put in my retainer. As it's made of all thing edible you can lick your lips to remove any excess sugar, but I always wipe any off because I think it's a tad weird eating your dry skin...
Then I stick in my retainer and vaseline my lips for extra hydration.

I've had it for 2 weeks now and the only compliant I have is that it does clump together in the pot; but that can easily be treated by shaking it or giving it a little prod.

I find this really useful and I hope you do too.

Maybelline Baby Skin Review

Hey Guys,
So I bought Maybelline's Baby Skin a few weeks ago when we went shopping in Birmingham. I had heard it was coming out but had no idea when, so was delighted when we walked into Boots and there it was.
First we all tried it on our hands at first to see if it really did make your skin look 'baby smooth' and it did. Not only did it make it 'baby smooth' it also make reduced the look of blemishes, making the whole area it was applied on look lovely and it felt really soft.
Although it was £7.99 (to me that is a lot!) and the tube is quite small, I just couldn't resist and I haven't been disappointed! I mostly use it as a primer before I apply foundation, it creates a really smooth base, filling in pores. It is transparent and has a gel like consistency, allowing for easy application, you just have to squeeze a little bit onto the end of your finger and apply gently onto your face, it just glides on.
You can also use it without applying foundation on top, and I do this quite often. It gives the skin a better look and as a teenager pores can be a big problem so this 'pore filling' gel has become a staple in my makeup bag. I have quite sensitive skin so it can be a problem buying these sort of products but this has caused me no problems.

You can buy it here.

Song Of The Week

Hey Guys,
I have chosen 2 songs this week, the first is Do I Wanna Know? by Arctic Monkeys and the second is Foundations by Kate Nash. Both of these songs have been going round and round my head this week and I have had to try and refrain from humming them in our mock exams...
I have really loved Arctic Monkeys since they released their album 'Suck It and See', since this album their music has just got better and better. The music video for Do I Wanna Know? is really simple and cool, check it out by clicking the link below.
Foundations is a song which I have always loved and after it woke me up on Monday morning I just can't get it out of my head, it is such a fun and catchy song, I adore it. I know it is quite an old song but I will never grow sick of it, plus the video is in a vintage style.

February Nails

Hey Guys,
Here's our monthly nail varnish update...

Holly
I have been trying to get out of winter and into the spring vibe, so have been wearing lighter shades of nail varnish. Surprisingly I have been wearing pastel pink nail varnish the most this month. Pink isn't normally my colour of choice, I naturally move towards darker shades but this month I decided to change it up a bit. The make of pastel pink nail varnish I have been wearing is Barry M's Strawberry Ice Cream, it is such a cute colour and I love it!

Daisy
I haven't worn any nail varnish for ages, which is odd for me but I have been noticing nails that I love. All over tumblr at the moment are these metallic nails, I'm pretty sure they're foils because I've not seen any vanish like this before - or at least not as good as. Here's a picture, so you can see for your self.
