Song of the Week

Hey Guys,

I've chosen a song by The Honey Trees called To be with you.

They 'are an American dream pop band from Sacramento and San Luis Obispo, consisting of Becky Filip and Jacob Wick. Their debut EP Wake The Earth was released on February 17, 2009.'

I've also really liked this strange song called Coco Loco - https://soundcloud.com/alpro-global/cocoloco

Song of the Week

Hey Guys,

My chosen Song of the Week is 'Rollercoaster' by Bleachers from the excellent album 'Strange Desire'.

The lead guitarist from Fun. , Jack Antonoff, is now the lead guitarist for Bleachers which appears to be his latest project.  Strange Desires, which features Grimes, who is one of my favourite artists at the moment, and the icon Yoko Ono, is such a well put together album that echoes the past, I love it.

A Creative Day

Hey Guys,

On Thursday I spent the day making some stuff that I needed. The first thing I made was a money box that I won't be able to get into. I had a smashable moneybox for Christmas last year and it was getting quite full. I decided I wanted to smash it to get the money out, but this meant being left with no money box and so consequently I decided to make a new one.

I used an old cardboard box and printed pictures that I found on the internet, sizing them on the computer first so they would fit perfectly.
I cellotaped the box firmly shut so I wont be able to get inside, then all I had to do was cut out the pictures, to decorate the box, and stick them on. I carefully made a slot for the money to go in and now I have a new money box!

Some of my shorts are getting too small for me and because summer is now upon us, I need shorts that fit! My mum had the brilliant idea of using some old jeans to make some new shorts.
We cut the legs off some old primark jeans, that I never wear,
and there were my new shorts. I used a stitch unpicker to fray the edges of the shorts. They have turned our brilliantly and I have saved money because I now don't have to buy new shorts.

The legs of the jeans were obviously left over so I decided to put them to good use. I made a little purse/makeup bag to go into my handbag. I used the bottom of the leg to make the main body of it and then made the flap with another bit.

I customised the little bag, sewing the word 'creep' onto the flap. I chose this word because I think the song 'Creep' by Radiohead (link below) is great.

The last thing I made was a banana loaf with my mum. We had some over ripe bananas which were perfect for the recipe, and the loaf tastes delicious.

Hope you can find something creative to do this summer!

Song of the Week

Hey Guys,
While driving home this lovely classic (well in my eyes) came onto the radio, and although I was 9 when this came out I do remember it - or at least the tune. Jason Mraz has recently released his new album YES! - which you should check out - on July 1st. But the song I'm talking about is I'm Yours from 2008.

I'm also loving 3 things from his Yes! album - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsrICJqWQ1E

Gnarly In Pink

Hey Guys,

'This short film celebrates the “Pink Helmet Posse,” three 6-year-old girls who share an unusual passion: skateboarding.' NY Times

I came across this short film on Rookie about a week ago and I think it is great. I love how this film celebrates that these young girls (Bella, Relz and Sierra) skateboard and shares their ambitions for the future. The film is important because it shows girls entering, at a young age, the male dominated sport of skateboarding with no fear.

Yet the "Pink Helmet Posse" are not tomboys, you will find them wearing pink tutus and glittery fairy wings, giving teddy a ride on their skateboard. These girly girls don't let their gender get in the way of doing what they love.

The film is a great production in the style of a documentary. 2 months were spent filming Bella, Relz, Sierra and their parents, I think it was definitely worth it.

To watch the brilliant film and read the short article that accompanies it click here...

The Pink Helmet Posse also have their own website which contains tutorials, a shop and a blog, as well as lots of information about the girls. View this here ...

These little girls are inspiring, not just to me but seemingly to many little girls everywhere. I hope the Pink Helmet Posse continue to skate, compete and inspire for a long time

Movie Review: The Fault in Our Stars

Hey Guys,
Here's our review of The Fault in Our Stars...

Daisy

Although I had a bad cinema experience with noisy people, I thoroughly enjoyed the film.
Having read the book, I was very happy to hear that most of the film was quoted with the odd exceptions. There were some scenes that had been cut out - or just not filmed - that weren't a crucial part in the plot, but still would have been nice to have seen, and fingers crossed they're on the deleted scenes on the DVD.
If you've seen the film you'll know how incredible it was, but I was really impressed by the little things.

I loved how the texts were scribbled on screen - if anything could describe 'girly teenager' it was those speech bubbles - I personally thought it created a more romantic(ish) atmosphere between Augustus and Hazel, because it gave the impression of looking at the texts from Hazel's point of view and how she felt (the little fireworks).
This may seem a bit silly to say, but I really appreciated that Hazel didn't wear make-up. I thought it would be inevitable that she did (because it was a movie), but the fact that she didn't made it feel more realistic, that she did have cancer, not just pretending to play somebody who has cancer, and that she was just a teenager who couldn't be bothered to apply make-up every morning.

Finally there is Shailene Woodley herself. I've watched virtually everything she is in (and she's in a new film, White Bird in a Blizzard), and the most recent film she had been in was Divergent. I loved Divergent, so I couldn't get passed the idea of going from kick ass Dauntless to helpless cancer kid in the same year - because lets face it, she's no Jennifer Lawrence who can change character whenever she feels like it and nobody would care - but I was pleasantly surprised. She's a fantastic actress and not once through the whole film did I think about the other character she played, Tris, she was completely devoted to making us think she was a kid with cancer. And now I want her to be in a hundred more new films, so I can obsess over her.

Holly and I both agree that this is a film that we could watch over and over and never get sick of it. So when it comes out on DVD we're going to have a giant girl fest crying over it.

Holly

I hadn't read the book before seeing the film and so didn't know what to expect from this film. I entered the cinema knowing only that this film was going to be emotional (Daisy had told me to take tissues!). The film completely exceeded my expectations and even though I knew it was going to be emotional, the rollercoaster I was taken on was one I certainly wasn't prepared for.

I came out of the screening feeling 100% inspired, not only by the amazing story - job well done John Green, I will definitely be buying your book as soon as possible - but also by the talent of all the actors in the film, who portrayed such difficult subjects with such beauty.
Something that made this film even more stunning was the brilliant music, which was perfect and wonderful. The music fit the film like a glove and had been chosen with amazing accuracy, I hardly noticed it for most of the film - and this is how I know it was perfect, it just seemed like normality.

I was so taken by Augustus and Hazel's story that I felt I could have watched the film forever, I certainly didn't want it to end. I found myself forgetting the fiction of the film, this was bought about by the incredible acting of Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort - truly flawless.

As Daisy has pointed out it was the little details that made this film so believable. Also although it contained the hugley important and dominant theme of cancer and terminal illness, there were so many underlying themes, making this film more engaging and in a sense more relatable than I ever anticipated it to be.

I would recommend this film to absolutely anyone and everyone, in fact I think everyone should be made to watch it. It is so inspiring and brings up many key challenges that many of us will face at some point in our lives.

I can't wait until this film comes out on DVD and I am so excited to read the book as soon as possible.

Song Of The Week

Hey Guys,
This week I have chosen the amazing song, 'Over and Done With', from the epic film Sunshine On Leith, which I really recommend you watch. We watched this film on the day we finished our GCSEs and fell in love with it. The film is based on the successful stage production of the same name, containing many brilliant songs originally by The Proclaimers.

This song brings back such great memories of the day we finished our exams and will forever be special to me. We also love 'I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)' by The Proclaimers, we like to sing it at the top of our voices on a regular basis!

Song of the week

Hey Guys,
George Ezra is a 19 year old singer and songwriter, who first came to attention when BBC Introducing picked up on a handful of tracks posted online. That led to a live session at the legendary Maida Vale studios and an oversubscribed performance on their stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. George has released a new album 'Wanted on Voyage' which has the song I've chosen on it, Budapest; I have to admit it isn't the most amazing song but for a fairly new artist it's decent. He will be also preforming at V on August 17th (if you're interested).

June Haul

Hey Guys,

I haven't done a haul for a while, so I am going to share with you what I bought in June.

I have a subscription to Company magazine so I get them in the post every month. They always arrive so early, for example, this morning I received August's issue, it isn't even July yet (well it wasn't when I started this post) and to be honest it all seems a bit ridiculous to me! I also, this month, got the Company High Street Edit, which came with a promotional magazine by Office.

It was a must for me to buy Glamour this month because Alexa Chung had been voted one of Glamour's women of the year and she has been an inspiration to me for a long time collaborated with Eyeko not so long ago and with this issue of Glamour came a free Alexa/Eyeko eyeliner in jet black. This is not a magazine I normally have any time for but this issue was quite good, containing lots of interviews with the winners of Glamour Awards, such as Paloma Faith and Fearne Cotton.

Last weekend I bought a little book on Russian History because I am doing A-level history next year. Also the book (not pictured here) 'The Red House' by Mark Haddon, who wrote the excellent book that is 'The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time', which I can't wait to read.

On a trip to Boots recently, I purchased Batiste dry shampoo in cherry, which is my personal favourite scent. I also bought Mango and Papaya body butter, it smells gorgeous and makes my hands really smooth. Rimmel London's Stay Matt foundation is awesome and I really recommend it, not only is it an excellent powder foundation, it is also quite cheap. This is the second time I have bought it and I love it.

I bought this black bag and blue jersey dress from Topshop in the sale. The bag was reduced from £50 to £15 and is really big, so will be perfect for going away. The necklace pictured on the right is my necklace for prom, and it is very iridescent so is a bit different.

Lastly I got this vintage suitcase from a vintage shop in Bridgnorth. It is navy blue and, like my black Topshop bag, is quite big so will be good for holidays. Looks like I have my luggage sorted! It is a bit worn but with wear and tear comes character so I don't mind at all.
