Song of the week

Hey Guys,

The song I've been listening to a lot is not the usual type of music I listen to it but it's pretty cool, so go check it out.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Hey Guys,

Last weekend we went to watch Catching Fire and we both agree this was an amazing film.

Daisy
When I first saw The Hunger Games I had no expectations, because I hadn't read or even heard of the books, but I instantly fell in love with Jennifer Lawrence and when I knew Catching Fire was soon to be released I had to read the books - which I bawled my eyes out at.
I had extremely high standards for this film, because I thought it was crucial to get every single character right and the cast was perfect.
There were so many direct quotes, the Cornicopia was much better than I imagined and scenes that were just standard in my mind blew me away; and let's not forget the special effects!!! Without them this film would have been a sham.

A few of my favourite scenes were;
The beach scene when Katniss comes to the realisation that she genuinely loves Peeta; mainly because Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are such amazing actors and they put real emotion behind their characters.
The poisonous fog/ monkey mutt scene because the special effects were incredible and I couldn't help but cry (again) when Mags sacrifices herself for Peeta.
Finally, the Jabber Jay scene. It was blatent that the special effects were outstanding but Jennifer's facial expressions just made this scene. I've watched my fair share of films from romantic to sci-fi, comedy and action and there has been no other actor/actress who has blown me away like Jennifer.

If you couldn't tell already but I absolutely loved that film and I would recommend it to anybody, even if you haven't read the books or seen the first film.
I'm so excited for the 3 hour long DVD - which means 30 minutes of deleted and unseen footage but I'm much more excited for Mocking Jay part 1 which is released ~21st Novemeber 2014.
Unfortunately it's in 2 parts but it has been anounced that the epilogue (the best part which made me cry for 15 minutes) will be in part 2 - so I'm not to fussed that they're a year apart.

Holly
I haven't read the books yet, I got them earlier this year but unfortunately they are in a queue of books waiting to be read, hopefully I will get round to reading them soon. I thought the first Hunger Games film was quite good and was expecting this one to be in a similar league. It completely exceeded my expectations and I thought it was a really excellent film.

Going to the cinema, not knowing the story of Catching Fire and therefore not knowing what was going to happen in the film was very exciting for me. Normally I read the book, if there is one, before going to see the film, but not having read the book already, I think, made the film more enjoyable as I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next.
I agree with Daisy, the casting for the film was fabulous, and knowing about Daisy's love for Jennifer before the film, I purposely sat myself away from her so as not to be in the firing-line of her hilarious emotional outbursts ;) I also think Jennifer is a great actress as well as a wonderful person, encouraging teenagers to be themselves.

I don't think I could choose my favourite scenes because I loved the whole film, I especially liked the background tension that could be felt throughout the film as the threat of revolution grew and grew. It was a very powerful and well made film.

Review: The Bling Ring

Hey Guys,
So when we went shopping recently Daisy bought the film 'The Bling Ring' in That's Entertainment, we both love Emma Watson and were excited to watch this film as she was in it. It is a short film, only lasting 90 minutes, directed by Sofia Coppola and the storyline is ...

'Inspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes.'
It is based on an article which appeared in Vanity Fair in 2008 about a gang from California, made up of 4 girls and one boy, that became known as 'The Bling Ring'. This gang broke into many celebrities houses, including Paris Hilton, Megan Fox and Orlando Bloom, to steal their belongings. The gang in total stole millions of dollars worth of clothes, shoes and other luxury items, showing the stereotypical American belief that fame and wealth will bring happiness.

After watching the film Daisy let me borrow it. Once we had both watched it, it became clear that we both had very different opinions about 'The Bling Ring' so we thought we would share them with you.
Daisy
I thought Emma Watson was amazing, as per usual, as well as the other actors but I hated the story line. When I read it I thought it sounded brilliant but when I watched it, I was so bored! There were multiple scenes where I watched the actors do things without sound and no interesting voice over or music. I really have nothing good to say about this film so i'll just let Holly tell you why she liked it.
Holly
Unlike Daisy I really enjoyed this film for many reasons. I thought that the roles were well cast and that the actors portrayed the gang's ego and deep thoughts very well. I also think the film itself was filmed very interestingly, for example as though the audience is in the mirror watching the fame-obsessed teens love themselves.

When the two main characters, Marc and Rebecca, break into Audrina Partridges house, it is all filmed in a single take from outside the house, we see Marc and Rebecca running round the house, and as they turn on the lights in each room more and more of what they are doing is revealed. I think this was a very clever way of filming this break in, as without the way Sofia Coppola has made each break in different, the film could have become too repetitive, at each break in we feel the characters become more comfortable with what they are doing.

The ending of the film shows the friendships fall apart, as each character tries to defend themselves and Marc realises that he had lost his 'best friend' Rebecca to the idea of 'fame' and 'fortune' a long time ago. Overall I really enjoyed this film and although it may not be for everyone, I think it is an interesting look into what the longing for fame and fortune can tempt people to do.

6th Form- What are we going to take?

Hey Guys,
So as we near our GCSE's (scary!!) our school wants us to decide what we are going to do for 6th form. Are we going to stay where we are and what are we going to take in 6th Form? Obviously these are big decisions but after our school held a transition evening everything made much more sense and we started to work out what we want to do with the next few years of our lives.

I (Holly) am not going to move schools as I think it would be quite stressful and I like it where I am! Before the transition evening I knew I definitely wanted to take Art and History in 6th form leaving me wondering about what other 2 subjects I wanted to do. I was a bit stuck between English Language and English Literature, but have finally decided on Literature. And although my last option isn't set in stone yet I think I may do Business Studies, although to be honest I am not entirely sure about that yet.

I, Daisy, am 90% sure that I want to stay where I am but when I was looking at different schools I was really drawn to Graphics and that's definitely what I would take if I left. If I do stay, which I most likely will if I'm not offered a place anywhere else, I never really knew what I wanted to take other than Geography, but I did want to look at IT because it's kinda like Graphics (ish); I wasn't going to take any of the 'Golden Subjects' but I figured English Language will come in handy and compliments IT/Graphics well. Finally I want to take Art because although I'm not the best at it, it's really relaxing and you're given the freedom to do what ever you want.

Song Of The Week

Hey Guys,
This week I (Holly) have chosen the song Smile As He Goes Home by Kim Churchill as the song of the week. I went to see Billy Bragg in concert last night and Kim Churchill was the support act, he was an amazing multi tasker, playing guitar, harmonica and a bass drum all at the same time, he makes so much noise for just one man! He is from Australia, writing this song about his late grandfather and seems like a lovely guy, so have a listen.

Hair Chalk

Hey Guys,
It's Daisy here and when Halloween came around I wanted to dye my hair red with those spray in, wash out cans and while I was out with Holly shopping she pointed out this stand full of hair chalks.
If you aren't familiar with hair chalks it is literally a piece of chalk specifically designed to stain your hair.

I had heard about these before and seen them on YouTube. The ones I bought were £3 for 6 chalks at one of those little stand in the middle of shopping centers. I thought it was an excellent price and I wouldn't mind getting some more because they did darker shades as well.
You can also get them from Amazon and Ebay quite cheap with a lot more colours which i'm also tempted to buy, and I will link a few of the web address below.

Unfortunately the chalk didn't come with instructions but on the little counter Holly spotted that it must be applied to wet/damped hair; I found it easier to fill an empty spray bottle with water and damp my hair with that. Thankfully because i'm blonde, the chalk stained my hair amazingly, however it did dry it horribly, it genuinely felt of straw.
It came out pretty easily, I just had to wash my hair a few times with shampoo but the red took at least three washes to come out but I wasn't that bothered about having ginger hair for a bit.
I've only used these a few times but the chalk does rub down quite a lot but for the price it's not that big of a deal.

I highly recommend them if you enjoy temporarily dying your hair or fancy having multi-coloured hair for a night out for a very reasonable price.

Song of the Week

Hey Guys,

The song I've chosen this week is McFly's new song 'Love is on the Radio'. I'm positive that most you have heard but if you haven't, obviously go and listen to it; it's such a cute song but also the music video is hilerious!

Sorrento, Days 3 and 4

Hey Guys,
Unfortunately during my holiday I came down with tonsilitis for about the 7th time this year, which really sucked seeing as I wanted to go out and explore Sorrento.
As I spent the majority of the day watch Family Guy and Bob's Burgers - which I'm now obsessed with, so I guess there's an up side - I obviously didn't take any photos or videos and when I did go out, it was only to get dinner.

So as you can see I didn't have a very eventful few days then but thankfully I only had it for two days.
