Today we are going to talk about our obsession with The Perks of Of Being A Wallflower. We saw the film at the end of last year and we loved it so much that we both bought the book, which is by Stephen Chbosky, who also directed the film.
'Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it, Charlie is navigating through the strange worlds of love, drugs, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, and dealing with the loss of a good friend and his favourite aunt.'
In Perks Of Being A Wallflower the main character, Charlie, has an English Teacher whom he is very fond of, Mr Anderson. This English teacher sets Charlie extra books to read outside of class, as it appears Charlie has a particular talent for English. The extra books which are mentioned in the book and film are:
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- A Separate Peace by John Knowles
- Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie (one of our favourites)
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger (Holly is currently reading this)
- On the Road by Jack Kerouac
- Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs
- Walden by Henry David Thoreau
- Hamlet by William Shakespeare
- The Stranger by Albert Camus
- The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
- "This Side of Paradise" by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Our favourite Character has to be Patrick ,who during the course of the book becomes Charlie's closest friend, they go through a lot together, but to find out what they go through you will have to read the book.
Patrick is a joker, on his last day of high-school he turns all the tool in the Workshop pink. Patrick is very eccentric and this is why he is such a loveable character.
Daisy's Favourite Line in the film is,when Patrick and Sam have just found out that Charlie's best friend killed himself and that Charlie has no friends. To console Charlie, Patrick proposes a toast to him and Charlie admits that he didn't think anyone notices him. Sam then says,' Welcome to the Island of Misfit Toys.' This is Daisy's favourite line because it is at this point that Charlie finally feels accepted and it is very emotional.
Holly's Favourite Scene takes place at the Homecoming Dance, the song 'Come on Eileen' by Dexy's Midnight Runners comes on, causing Sam and Patrick to get really excited about the fact they are playing good music. They then go on to perform a routine they had choreographed in their living room. In Holly's opinion it is perfection. This is definitely a song we will be requesting at our prom!

'I don't know. I just had a great day. I hope you did, too.' Charlie, Perks of Being A Wallflower
